Dear valued customer,

Do your children know how to stay safe around water?

Did you know that over 55% of parents surveyed said they would not be confident their child would know what to do if they fell into open water?

With figures indicating that around 25% of primary school pupils leave school unable to swim, there is a real fear that as a result of the pandemic many more children will lack the ability or confidence to swim or self-rescue, should they find themselves in difficulty in the water.

At Active Halton, we are supporting the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week campaign, running from 18-25 June 2022, and urging our customers to access the charity’s free online resources to ensure their children have the skills to enjoy a lifetime of fun in the water. The resources can be accessed here – https://www.rlss.org.uk/pages/category/drowning-prevention-week-campaign

However, we will be going one step further and offering all children/young people enrolled on our ‘Learn to Swim’ programme a water safety session as part of their normal weekly swimming lesson, from the 18th to the 24th June. Swimmers will learn life-saving skills, including how to stay safe both in and around the water. Activities will be fun and engaging for all ages, from Ducklings to Swim Academy.

SWIMMING IN CLOTHES – please can all swimmers in stage 5, stage 6, stage 7 and Swim Academy wear a pair of shorts (above the knee) and t-shirt over their swimming costume/shorts. Please ensure any clothing worn does not have buttons or zips and is of a suitable material (e.g. no jumpers).

All children will receive a FREE certificate for taking part, which you can collect from reception at the end of their lesson.

PHOTO COMPETITION – please make sure you collect your certificate from reception, as we will be hosting a photo competition with some great prizes up for grabs, including a month’s free swimming lessons and ZOGGS merchandise. All you need to do to take part is take a photo holding your certificate, tag either Kingsway Leisure Centre or Brookvale Recreation Centre and use the hashtag #drowningpreventionweek. Please make sure you do tag the leisure centre, so we can count your entry. Winners will be selected at random and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize will be awarded at each site.

I will be on and around poolside all week, so I am really excited to see what exciting things the children will be getting up to, whilst learning how to enjoy the water safely. If you have any questions or concerns, or require further information, please do get in touch.

Thank you

Jodi Gossage (Aquatics Manager)
